Riddles of the Sphinx

Fiction, Great Britain, 1977, 16mm

Direction: Laura Mulvey & Peter Wollen
With Dinah Stabb, Merdelle Jordine,Riannon Tise

The pioneer style of the film consists on the one hand in that the filmmaker-theorist in first person addresses questions to the viewer concerning the Oedipus complex and contemporary patriarchal society. On the other hand, through the audiovisual presence of the enigmatic Sphinx, which in third person narrates the story of Louise, a divorced and working mother, Mulvey constructs her film in three sections and 13 segments. Each segment encompasses other narrative voices, dialogues and sounds and a slow panning rotation of the camera in different domestic and professional environments. Thus the film, by deconstructing conventional filming practices, offers an alternative cinematic form through which to reconsider the conventional images and meanings of female representations in film and as a whole the meaning of the female subject and motherhood in patriarchal culture.

Laura Mulvey & Peter Wollen

She is considered the most important theorist of the feminist / psychoanalytic approach in film studies, but also an important filmmaker of the feminist avant-garde. With her ex-husband Peter Wollen, also known theorist and experimental filmmaker, she made six features, the most known of which are Penthesilia (1974), Riddles of the Sphinx (1977) and Crystal Gazing (1982).
