India, the Great Mother
India, matri bhumi/India, the Great Mother
Documentary, Italy-France, 1959, ’DCP (35mm)
Filmed like a kind of episodic narrative, the film describes Rosselini’s meeting with India – a country suspended between tradition and thousand-year old cultures. The film consists of four stories. The first is that of the elephant runner who marries; next is the one of the engineer who has been working for seven years on the construction of the Hirakud dam; the third is that of the old peasant who lives a contemplative life and saves the life of a tiger; and, finally, the one of the man and the monkey. The man dies under the scorching desert sun, leaving the monkey to fend for itself until it can find a new master.
