Journey to the Capital
Ταξίδι στην πρωτεύουσα/Journey to the Capital
Fiction, Greece, 1980, Digital Beta (35mm)
With Stavros Mermingis, Costas Kazakos, Despina Bebedeli, Katerina Karousou
Going against the standardized, commercial cinematic approach of his time, Papayannidis presents the descent of a young country boy into modern-day Hades – the city of Athens. Through his involvement with outcasts and delinquents, and his acquaintance with despair and death, he will come of age at lightning speed, and will be led to a very major turning point in his life. By encompassing current events of the time and combining older with upcoming actors, the director, together with the author Pavlos Matessis, describes a nightmarishly inhuman Athens, from which, however, there is always a way out for those who go through its purgatory.
He was born in Thessaloniki in 1947. He made his first feature film, The Age of the Sea in 1978. This was followed by Journey to the Capital (1982) and Hometown (1987). He returned in 2002 with Secret November.
