The Fifth Gospel of Kaspar Hauser
O Quinto Evanxeo de Gaspar Hauser/ The Fifth Gospel of Kaspar Hauser
Fiction, Spain, 2013, 16mm
With Josecho, Sara García, Oliver Laxe, Nando Vázquez, Alberto Gracia, Pedro Soler, Quique Amil.
Α rendition of the Kaspar Hauser story is staged by a disparate quintet: a sadomasochist dwarf, a beautiful maiden, a cynical brute, a romantic sailor and a nervous Batman. You do not need to know the original characters of Hauser’s legend to follow this film. You do not need to follow the film… period. Allow it to follow you. Gracia’s direction is elaborate and devised, and creates a surreal chaos where Language trembles, where Religion or Popular Culture are examined with concern and humor. But he also leaves the viewer with plenty of space to contemplate the world around him.
He was born in Spain in 1978. His work spans a variety of forms including painting, drawing, performance, video and installations. His first short film, Microfugas, was shot in 2008. The Fifth Gospel of Kaspar Hauser is his first feature film and won the FIPRESCI prize at the 2013 IFF Rotterdam.
