Reinventing Cinephilia: one day conference

Friday 25th October 2013, 10.30 – 14.00

Greek Film Archive in collaboration with Association of European Film Archives and Cinematheques (A.C.E.)

In the wake of the 21st century the issues such as the future of our past and the death of cinema have been raised in the context of the reinvention of Cinephilia. Cinephilia in the digital era and the challenges of archive programming are the main axes of this gathering of archivists, filmmakers and academics, which addresses to film professionals as well as to cineastes.

The questions of how to curate film for the new Cinephilia and how to reinvent Cinephilia in times of crisis are brought to the forefront. Also, in a wired world where young people are constantly downloading films and participate in blogging communities and social media environments, what brings still audiences to the movie screens and in particular to cinemathèques?

Programme

10.30: Welcome from Maria Komninos, Director of 7th Athens Avant-garde Film Festival

10.45: Keynote speaker Laura Mulvey, Film Theorist and Film maker, Professor at the of History of Art and Screen Media School of Arts – Birkbeck, University of London

11.30: Keynote speaker Nicole Brenez, Head of the Avant-garde programs at the Cinémathèque Française, Professor at Université Paris III, Sorbonne
“The consulted cinema and its effects”

The consulted cinema and the culture of consultation refer to the films available on the internet, as “reference prints”, and is opposed and articulated to the culture of seeing films on the cinema screen. What effects, on cinephilia but also on new styles, such a culture of consultation is generating, for the best and for the worst?
